The Sutter Buttes are a small circular complex of eroded volcanic lava domes which rise as buttes above the flat plains of the Central Valley of California in the United States. The highest peak, South Butte, reaches about 2,130 feet above sea level. The Buttes are located just outside of Yuba City, California in the Sacramento Valley, the northern part of the Central Valley. They are named for John Sutter, who received a large land grant from theMexican government. The Sutter Buttes are sometimes referred to as the world's smallest mountain range.
We were so lucky to have such beautiful weather, some of the other classes had gone the day or two before ours and the weather was cold and very windy. I can't even imagine how that must have been...you know how I feel about wind. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the landscape and taught us a lot. My friend Lorie and I knicknamed her wikipediakathy (I know it's not the best knickname, but it's all we could come up with). She kept us entertained for sure. I especially like where she told the kids that you should not chew gum when you are wearing your prom dress because you will look like a giraffe chewing gum....interesting right??
Emery's bud Trevor caught a little lizard while we were having lunch. I wasn't expecting to see so much grass and meadow like areas inside the Buttes. It was very pretty and peaceful. There are a lot of wild hogs roaming the area so we did see some dead calves on the ground as-well as vultures flying above.
There are a lot of cattle roaming around and they don't seem to mind us at all. I'm always amazed that cows can climb such steep hills....there were a lot of hills in some areas. It was a nice day and we enjoyed being able to spend it with our good friends Lorie and Trevor too. Yes, together Lorie and I have to claim these two coo-coo heads.
